Michael G Cloughley is one of the founders of OAKS DIRECT. Inc., a direct mail consulting firm specializing in printing and mailing production, mailing list acquisition, and email blasts for small and medium-sized business clients nationwide.
After working in the direct mail industry as a sales executive for more than 20 years, Michael’s extensive knowledge about postal regulations, design considerations, and how to achieve the most cost-effective results stand him in good stead to be the go-to direct mail provider for a variety of clients.
“Correctly designed and targeted direct mail can be the most powerful marketing tool there is,” Michael says. “The problem comes when someone in business decides to do a mailing without understanding there’s a right way and a wrong way. People who do it on their own, without any consultations on how to achieve the maximum result often end up losing money and souring on the whole idea. The right offer to the right list at the right time is always a home run when it comes to return on marketing budget investment. The hard part is getting the right list – or making the right offer, and knowing when that offer needs to hit someone’s mailbox.”
That’s where Michael’s experience really comes into play. Not only can he assemble a freelance team of killer copy-writers and award winning designers, he knows the best place to place a job to save clients money on production and postage. “No printer or mail house is ever going to turn down a job,” says Michael. “But, if their equipment isn’t a good fit for the work, they’ll farm it out to some other shop, take a mark-up for themselves, and never tell their customer.” By having a region-wide network of to-the-trade-only suppliers at his disposal, Michael has the ability to place work where it will be the best fit, which always means the best prices. Plus, Michael works from home, so his overhead is very low. Great prices plus low overhead means the client saves money every time.
Michael received his undergraduate degree in mass media and marketing from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. He is currently on the board and executive committee of the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association and serves on the membership committee of the Magellan Group. Michael and his wife, Sarah Oaks, live in Radnor, PA., where they spend their spare time coddling their 1968 Chevrolet Impala convertible.
